Learn More about Acupuncture

Dr. Adam Kuang, M.D.

Chinese Medicine Physician, Acupuncturist

is a part of an integrated system of primary health care, known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), involving the insertion, manipulation of needles, and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupoints.

How does the acupuncture work?

In TCM theory, it is believed that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface.. An obstruction in the movement of energy is like a dam that backs up. Thus, needle the acupoints which are distributed along channels is going to unblock the obstruction at the dams, reestablish the regular flow, and as a result help the internal organs to correct the imbalances.

Are there any side effect of treatment?

Usually not. Acupuncture is absolutely safe if performed properly by well-trained, qualified, and experienced practitioners. However, the most common side effects may be soreness, bleeding or bruising at the needle sites. These pass within a short time, and never require anything more than a bit of rest to overcome.

What are the needles like? Do they hurt?

People experience acupuncture needling differently. Most patients feel only a slight pinch as the needle is inserted; some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place, there is no discomfort. Acupuncture needles are very thin, solid and are made from stainless steel.

Any reminders on the day of treatment?

Yes. To enhance the value of treatment, the following guidelines are important:

*       Do not fast, over-eat, over-exercise, or consume alcoholic beverages within few hours before or after the treatment.

*       Plan your activities so that after the treatment you can get some rest, or at least not have to be working at top performance.

*      Take your prescription medicine regularly. However, tell your doctor in advance if you are using blood thinners or suffering from bleeding disorders.

*       Always keep a positive attitude towards your treatment. Send your feedback timely to the doctor so that treatment can be adjusted accordingly.
