Hepatitis A Facts

l  a viral liver disease that can cause mild to severe illness

l  globally, there are an estimated 1.4 million cases of Hepatitis A every year

l  the Hepatitis A virus is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water, or through direct contact with an infectious person

l  epidemics can be explosive in growth and cause significant economic losses

l  vaccination decreases Hepatitis A outbreaks

Who gets Hepatitis A infection?

Anyone can get infected by hepatitis A virus, but those more likely to are people who:

l  reside in endemics areas (China)

l  travel to developing countries

l  live with someone who currently has an active Hepatitis A infection

l  use illegal drugs, including noninjection drugs

l  have unprotected sex with an infected person

l  provide child care

l  have chronic liver disease

  According to World Health Organization, improved sanitation and the Hepatitis A vaccine are the most effective ways to combat the disease. 


Universal vaccination of children against Hepatitis A is currently recommended by ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices)
