Seasonal Flu Shot 2010-2011
Dr. Yee Chien Tan, B.M.
General Practitioner
Every winter one in four individuals will be affected by the flu, resulting in 3-5 days absence from work, school and other commitments. The following individuals who are more prone to flu complications are highly recommended to have the flu vaccine every year:
· All children aged 6 months up to 19 years
· All adults aged 50 years and older
· All women who are or will be pregnant during the flu season
· People who are living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities
· Individuals who have long-term health problems
· Healthcare workers who have direct contact with patients
· Caregivers and household contacts of children less than 6 months of age
Getting a Flu Shot decreases the chance of the average person catching the flu by 80%. It also reduces the risk of cross infection and thus protects those that are not vaccinated.
As recommended by the World Health Organization, each injected seasonal flu vaccine contains three influenza viruses:
- an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus
- an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus
- a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus
As the supply of vaccine is limited, we invite you to get vaccinated soon.
